Self-taught, Giovanni Colombo began painting in the early 1930s, exhibiting his works in a first solo exhibition held in Rome at Palazzo Torlonia in 1932; after a second exhibition in the capital at the Galleria Angeletti (1936), he held several solo exhibitions in Milan, attracting critical attention for the first time in 1937. His exhibition activity continued even after the war.
In his landscapes and views, especially those of Milan, he captures characteristic corners with immediacy and pictorial vivacity, particularly the picturesque views of the Navigli canals, remaining faithful to a naturalistic style derived from Impressionism.
The work in question is an intimate glimpse of the Milan Cathedral, from one of the most famous streets leading to it.
